5 step diagnosis

think you might have a dairy allergy or intolerance?
If you’ve never considered that your symptoms or those of your child might be dairy related, follow our 5 step diagnosis plan to find out.

Keep a food and symptom diary for a couple of weeks - writing down everything you eat and any symptoms you (or your child) experience.

If your diary seems to indicate a link between eating dairy products and feeling unwell, try cutting out all milk and derivatives for a fortnight  (this isn’t appropriate for babies on milk formula and in which case you should go straight to step 3).

If symptoms improve, see your GP - he or she may decide further tests are needed to either confirm the diagnosis or rule it out.

If an allergy or intolerance is confirmed you’ll need to remove dairy products completely or at least cut them down significantly.

If it’s a baby or child that has been diagnosed, you may need further help and support from a specialist dietician. You can ask to be referred by your GP.
